Marijuana is more harmful than you think

(U-WIRE) STILLWATER, Okla. -- A common misconception amongst young people is that smoking marijuana is less harmful than smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol and doing harder illegal drugs.

They are mistaken.

While smoking weed may not cause lung cancer, liver damage, or cause your brain to look like Swiss cheese, it is still just as harmful. The effects that marijuana has on a person's mental state may be the most damaging. Marijuana promotes a culture of ambivalence and apathy. While a person may smoke weed to chill or mellow out what they are actually doing is becoming devoid of most external stimuli.

There is a correlation between smoking marijuana and lack of ambition, achievement of goals, ability to concentrate, and laziness. These characteristics are most prevalent in habitual smokers.

The growth in the usage of this drug is a social movement. Smoking weed has become less deviant and more accepted as mainstream behavior. It is believed by some that in our lifetime marijuana will become legal. If this is true, it will be detrimental to our society.

There are enough people in the USA that live off of welfare, which drop out of school, who are addicted to harder drugs, and who just don't give a damn. Why should we provide them another opportunity in which to fail?

Children are brought up in homes in which this type of behavior is acceptable and the cycle continues.By allowing marijuana use to become a fad we are also teaching people that it's OK to slack off, to become lazy, and not live up to ones potential.

I'm sure there are some readers who use marijuana on a regular basis and believe that I am full of it, however ponder this. Most college drop outs, teen pregnancies, forcible removal from a job, petty burglaries, spousal beatings and spread of STDs are all related to drug use, mostly marijuana.

Stopping this rising epidemic of marijuana use will only allow the younger generation opportunities in which won't be tainted by peer pressure and the premature use of this harmful drug.
